Feral

We see Cane Toads (Bufo marinus) at night time in our garden. They are native to Central and South America and were introduced into Australia in 1935. This was done in the expectation that the toads would prey on pest insects in sugar cane crops. There was some evidence that this had been done successfully in other countries. But it was disastrous in Australia. The toads were ineffective against the insect pests. And worse, they invaded native ecosystems causing huge damage to vulnerable species. They have now spread across most of the northern third of the continent.  Lessons have been learned!
