'Uit Zee Land' (Out of Sea - Land)

'Uit Zee Land'
(Out of Sea - Land)

This is a large sculpture in the village where we live in the Netherlands. I took the photo because it was a nice silhouette against the sky, but I thought I shoud add a few words about it, so after 30 minutes looking up things on the internet....

The piece is called - Biggo van Duvelant, stichter van Rhoon

By Maria Glandorf, 2004

The history of Rhoon goes back to the year 1199, when the Zeeland Jonker, Biggo of Duyveland, received from Count Dirk VII of Holland the title to a sandbar in the Oude Maas (wetland river area).

A Jonker was a noble predicate awarded to untitled - and office bearing - nobles during the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. (A bit like an English Esquire )

The Dutch Republic-officially known as the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden), the Republic of the United Netherlands, was a republic in Europe existing from 1581 to 1795, preceding the Batavian Republic, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and ultimately the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands.
