Blue Horizons

Yes, I move, I live, I wander astray—
   Water running, intermingling, over the sands.
I know the passionate pleasure of motion;
   I taste the forests; I touch strange lands.

Yes, I move—perhaps I am seeking
   Storms, suns, dawns, a place to hide.
What are you doing here, pale and polished—
   You, the stone in the path of the tide?

Running Water, by Alfonsina Storni

Spent part of the day on a pleasant walk with my wife around the Blue Horizons preserve, where we spent some time observing an amusing grebe and listening to the quirky yodeling of some long tailed ducks. It felt like a last hurrah of sorts, as these birds will surely be heading farther north very soon.

Recent arrivals include a winter wren heard on my walk yesterday and turkey vultures cruising overhead. The goldfinches are starting to put on their bright yellow summer plumage, and deer are coming closer and closer to the house to nibble on the fresh grass shoots coming up. I'd say it's almost Actual Spring, but I don't think we're there quite yet. I predict another muddy spell before that happens.
