Life after Burradoo, NSW

A gumtree with white flowers?

No, a flock of hundreds of white corellas. The noise these birds collectively made this morning as they flew over was absolutely deafening. They flew back and forth across the golf course, perhaps looking for somewhere to perch and eat.

When I arrived home from my walk there was a letter from a neighbour from a nearby street inviting us to a meeting to discuss strategies to deal with the nuisance of the corellas. The letter said "Apart from the noise they create early in the mornings, they damage solar panel connections, defecate on property, damage trees and drive away many species of bird life which have previously inhabited the area at various times of the year." It seems the real problem that our neighbours want to solve is that someone living in the nearby street insists on feeding the corellas. Despite receiving a letter from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services, explaining why feeding the corellas is detrimental to them, the person persists. It seems a number of other neighbours have pleaded with her not to do so but she is insistent that the birds need her. It sounds like a bit of a sad story and I think it's one that we might be better to stay out of despite the fact that the corellas have certainly damaged our gumtree.
