Churchyard with a View

The 12th century church of St Martha-on-the-Hill (extra), or St Martha's is perched on the top of the North Downs near Guildford. It is only accessible on foot and is the only church in Surrey to be located on the Pilgrims' Way. It was in ruins by the 18th century, but rebuilt in 1848-50 incorporating many of the original architectural designs, including Norman windows.

The churchyard is still in active use with, poignantly, new graves from 2021. Its incumbents enjoy a wonderful view over the Surrey Hills with the highest, Leith Hill to the East, and round to the Devil's Punchbowl in the west.
