The Food Journey Continues…..

We could just buy everything in the supermarket, but no, shopping is an art here that I take seriously. We do go to the supermarket to buy cereal, yogurt (greek, not Italian), tea, coffee, a 3 pack of mini Prosecco bottles and Aperol (yes, we make our own spritz), TP and the like. We eat breakfast at home, otherwise we would OD on cappuccini e cornetti. We go to the Fruttivendolo for our produce, the Salumeria for meats and cheeses, and an Enoteca for wine. We sampled several different shops throughout town, but we have settled into our favorite vendors and have become ‘regulars’ — especially at the wine shop! The produce at the Ortafrutta in Piazza San Salvadore is simply amazing. They have an incredible array of incredibly fresh vegetables and fruits and several types of each type from different regions! Zucchini with and without flowers. Oranges from Spain and Sicily. It is so overwhelming that we have to make a plan before entering the shop. It is small and there are at least 4 people tending to the produce…not the customers, mind you, the produce. Keeping them moist and fresh, culling any that are looking weary, arranging them artfully….wow. They let you grab your own produce and will answer questions and help, but they don’t hover. Here produce reigns!
