Cardiff State Beach

A fine and fascinating walk through San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve with Chris and Carly. There are many of these lagoons along the coast hereabouts, the remnants of extensive salt marshes that are a rare habitat in Southern California.

The walk ended at Cardiff by the Sea State beach where we had lunch at a roadside Mexican restaurant before setting out on the return through the reserve. Lots of interesting plants and flowers, birds and insects. We saw a Road Runner (but not Wylie P Coyote), snowy egrets and humming birds, fish jumping high out of the water.

The State Beach was very popular on this lovely sunny Sunday afternoon and, as always, the rolling surf of the Pacific Ocean was mesmerising.
