Happy Family (except one!)

Started the day off with an amazing waffle/crepe/baguette breakfast at O Gato Comeu-te a Língua, just round the corner from the flat we're staying in - highly recommended if you're ever in Vila Nova de Gaia. Tried to go back this afternoon, but there was a queue to get in, so we gave up (it's a big holiday, anniversary of the Carnation Revolution).

Took a while trying to figure out the metro (under 13s go free, but only discovered that after we'd bought cards for them). Another huge queue to get into the bookshop where JK Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter, and that was with paid tickets! Don't tell me bookshops or books are on their way out; anyway, going to try again tomorrow.

Wandered around, or rather, up and down in Porto (first extra of Vila Nova on the other bank, with all the port wine lodges), listening to all sorts of musicians, including a Russian saxophonist, and students from the law faculty ( second extra).

Then a boat tour of the six bridges over the Douro, where a French family really annoyed me by being utterly inconsiderate... oh well.

By which time, some of us were shattered, so we brought the kids home for an earlyish night, while Deb and Sam have stayed across the river to have a meal to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary tomorrow.

Gratefuls:
- seeing something of this stunning city at last
- Zion and Allegra being happy to come back with us and going to bed happily
- one more day with them...
