It's Definitely Iris Season

The purple and white is Earl of Essex, something we bought years ago at a wonderful iris farm on the way to the mountains, but I don’t have the name of the peach colored flower. I love knowing the names of the varieties, but sometimes they just appear on their own without a proper introduction.

Slow day around the house. I made a rhubarb upside down cake with cardamom, ginger and pistachio. The recipe suggests serving it with whipped cream, making it a full meal. It was a tricky recipe—although it specified 3/4 cup of finely chopped nuts, there was no suggestion about what to do with them. Were they part of the batter, part of the upside down glaze, a topping perhaps? I looked up similar recipes on line, which were so similar that they didnt give any instruction either! I finally decided the pistachios belonged in the batter, and it made a very nice cake. With whipped cream.
