Ground Cover

Having no 'lawn' or 'turf' on our third of an acre, we try to grow mostly native plants with about 25% non natives. In the sunny areas of the 'yard' we grow several xeriscape ground covers. The pink flower is of Sunshine Mimosa, a native perennial ground cover. It's colorful flowers, which bloom most of the year, attract bees and butterflies. It's gentle to walk on and takes no care. It has a fairly deep root system and is helpful in controlling soil erosion. The cute little yellow flower is on the Perennial Peanut plant. Introduced from Brazil in 1936, it's highly resistant to drought, can be walked on and it's flowers taste like peanuts. It needs no mowing and isn't invasive in natural areas because it doesn't spread by seeds. It's often planted in places prone to water runoff and soil erosion and animals can graze on it safely. I love seeing large areas planted with this ground cover with it's mass of bright yellow flowers!
