Gloria Cheng at WWU

I think we should camp out at WWU this week. Last night, percussion. This evening, piano. Tomorrow, piano and orchestra. I love living in a college town. Gloria Cheng specializes in music by contemporary composers. There were nine in the program this evening and only one name sounded vaguely familiar. Both Shelly and I especially liked the work of Adelaide Pereira da Silva and Terry Riley. What l loved about her playing was how emotionally rich it was. And how she held our attention at the end of each piece long enough for the music to fully end before relaxing and letting us know we could react. So often people break the spell by clapping too soon. Not tonight.
