Literary Connections

The Literary theme for today's Mono Monday challenge (thanks to 60plus for hosting today) encouraged me to head out to Chawton and a visit to Jane Austin's home for the last 8 years of her short life.  Despite it being a Bank Holiday Monday the house was relatively quiet to explore.

Jane wrote her novels at this little table set up near a window in the dining room. Apparently one of the doors nearby squeaked which gave her enough warning to cover or hide her papers ... it was not the done thing for a woman in her time and place to have such an occupation. She wrote or revised six of her most famous novels here.

After a walk round the village and nearby Chawton House estate (owned by her brother) I headed into Alresford and was delighted to find the Watercress Line, a heritage steam railway, in full operation for the BH. It would have been churlish not to take some photos of the event (extra)!
