Melville Monument, St Andrew Square

I had a lot of chores to do along the east end of town today cutting back and forward through 'the Square' to do so.  The 1st Viscount Melville, Henry Dundas is the figure at the top of the column in the centre of St Andrew Square.  He became MP for Midlothian in 1774.  As Home Secretary he is thought to have used his influence to frustrate efforts to end the slave trade. Dundas died in 1811, the monument was constructed between 1821 and 1827.
