Burnham Overy Staithe

Tommy and Inca arrived last night and it was lovely to see them again. We chatted a bit and then headed off to sleep, I was very tired after my early morning.

Today was a beautiful day - sunny, blue skies and no wind. After breakfast Gavin and I walked from Burnham Overy Staithe to Holkham. This is a view of Burnham Overy Staithe - staithe is an old English word meaning 'landing place' and overy means 'over the water'. The staithe was popular this morning with children paddling about in kayaks, on SUP’s, boats and generally enjoying the warm weather. The walk went along the sea defence wall to the beach (see extra for the sea defence wall). These sea defences are built above the salt marshes to help prevent flooding, and they lie just behind the beaches so no houses can be built overlooking the beaches. The salt marsh is a haven for all the numerous birds that frequent this area. Today we saw the usual wading birds and many geese - Egyptian, Canadian, Greylag and Barnacle - but I was pleased to see many Shelducks too.

After the walk we went home and on the way picked up crab sandwiches for lunch from the Crab Hut in Brancaster. Inca had been studying all morning and Tommy was working on his project. Gavin has enjoyed pottering about, he mowed the lawn yesterday and did some gardening. As the garden is small he finds it doesn’t take long and you can see the results of your efforts very quickly.

Later at about 5.30pm when the tide was high, Inca took a break from her studies and Gavin, Inca and Tommy went sailing. The harbour was very busy as it was a beautiful day, although not much wind for the sailors. I walked around with Xena trying to photograph the birdlife.

I am now about to make supper and then I am hoping to get back to the beach for sunset, which happens late now, at 20.50.
