Ewan McClure

Today's the day ...................... for a demonstration

An evening event at Broughton House in Kirkcudbright tonight was a fascinating glimpse into how an artist goes about painting a portrait in oils from life.

The artist was the talented Ewan McClure and the sitter was the well-known proprietor of a local joinery and woodwork business, Andy Campbell.  In the space of an hour, Ewan managed to capture a staggeringly good likeness of Andy on to canvas - all the while, answering questions from the audience on every aspect of his work.  He also had to cope with a model who didn't keep absolutely still - because he was not averse to joining in the discussion also.

Andy's face appeared, as if by magic, out of the blocks of rough colour.  But then, as we all know, it's all about the light - and how the artist can make sense of it.  I leave you the extras to decide whether you think he did a good job ......................!
