Day's Eyes

My dad would give a warning,
trigger something in my brain:
Quick, before the grass is cut,
make a daisy chain!

I'd hear the mower's wheels
as it trundled down the path,
but if I started picking,
long stems, and very fast,

I could make myself a necklace
and wear the thing with pride,
although within an hour or so
the daisies would have died.

Yet, even now, I love to see
white daisies on a lawn,
and warn myself, before I mow,
the green will seem forlorn.
