Sun play

Secondborn and I arrived at Edinburgh Waverley mid afternoon to remedy the embarrassment that she'd never been to Scotland. Nor Northumberland, so from the train window she got to see a few of its wonderful beaches, the Angel of the North, then the bridges over the Tyne. Durham cathedral, sadly, was hidden from view by a stationary train.

I'd booked us into a hostel on the Royal Mile so we could be proper tourists and as soon as we'd dumped our bags we headed up past the cathedral to the Castle, down past Princes Street Gardens to the Scott Monument then up Calton Hill to look at the views right over the city and out to the bridges over the Forth. During our walk she experienced Scotland's extraordinary capacity to drop temporary rain out of a blue sky. We messed around with cameras and columns in the skittish sun and the wind before walking to a recommended restaurant in New Town. Afterwards, also recommended by us: Noto. Not cheap but utterly delicious.

When we came out it was still so light that we went back up Calton Hill for another gaze.
