St Ives

We took a local bus from Penzance to Carbis Bay and from there walked along the South West Coastal Path to St Ives.  It's a fantastic coast line of coves with golden sandy beaches.

Our first destination was the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.  She moved to Cornwall at the outbreak of the Second World War and to the Trewyn Studio, St Ives in 1949.   On her death in 1975 her will asked that Trewyn should become a permanent exhibition of her work.  It's a wonderful experience to see the studio where she worked and the sculptures she placed in her garden.

Next was Leach Pottery - it was set up in 1920 by Bernard Leach who trained in Japan.  The museum is a show case for his work and shows the production process.

Our last visit of the day was to the Tate, St Ives.  The building is on the former gas works site overlooking Porthmeor Beach and the Atlantic Ocean.  The original Tate opened in 1993 designed by Evans and Shalev has a seaside art deco look.  The gallery exhibits work by artists that have a link to the St Ives area.
