Ok so what's this tool used for? Today I attended a Birmingham FEI Skill Share in The Lickey Hills. Skill Shares are great places to update and increase knowledge to use back in Forest School sessions.

The focus of today was on tool use, from knives to froes and may others in between and their care. There was also highlighted the work of Tools for Self Reliance, who collect old tools and refurbish them to be used in Africa where skilled workers are often having to share their use.

The part on the history of tools was really interesting especially how it related to Birmingham industry. It's sad that so many of the traditional skills are dying out and that we now have to purchase (often inferior) tools from abroad.

Perhaps our lack of nature connectedness is a key reason for this. Right tool for the right job was a key point of the day and it seems many Forest School leaders have been taught to use the wrong tool for wood splitting. Having used a froe for the first time today you can quickly see why it's the right tool for the job.

Meeting other people is also a great part of the sessions and I am amazed at how many people outside of teaching come to these event but are used in some context to support the curriculum in schools.

So all in all a very interesting day, but can you guess the use for the tool above? It's linked to the site we were using today.

Answers tomorrow.
