Peace

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." – John 14:27

Today has been a very up and down day for me, emotionally-speaking, so I’ve uploaded a photo of this Peace rose from my front garden as a gentle reminder to myself. I love the story behind the creation of this cultivar, which I’m sure most people know, but if not here’s a link to the Wikipedia page:

And in other news, as they say, I am happy to report that today I have had my first ever win on a Premium Bond. I only have £5 worth in total, thus the odds on me winning anything are microscopically small, so you can imagine my delight (and amusement) at receiving a cheque from Ernie for £25.00 this morning for a bond which I bought 57 years ago on 21st September 1965 when I was 17!

Not only that, but I forgot to mention something yesterday when talking about the visit we had from a previous owner of our house. She asked me if we knew that we had in our back garden an ice house. I told her that her son told us when he showed us round that it was an air raid shelter. No, she said, it was definitely the ice house which belonged to Monkhams, the big house in whose grounds our estate was built! It is underneath an ash tree and is now filled in and covered with ivy, but it was interesting to learn the truth about it.

I have been enjoying looking through those fabulous old documents that we were given yesterday. The indentures for the sale of the land on which our house was built show the owner as James Robert Twentyman of Shanghai in the Empire of China and The Hall, Kirby Misperton, Pickering in the County of York Esquire, all written in the most beautiful calligraphy.
