Peace

At the front of the house where I played Mah-Jong this afternoon is this huge rose, instantly recognisable as Peace, maybe the nation-s favourite rose. It was developed in France in the 1930s. To save it from loss in World War the grower exported cuttings to Italy, Turkey, Germany and the USA. It burst onto the scene commercially in 1945 and was an instant success, partly because of the name chosen I imagine. It is still a popular rose today. Jill’s bloom has more pink than is usual. This colouring happens as the individual flower ages.
I remember my parents being very proud of their Peace rose in our garden when I was a child.
