View from Makrinitsa

Today we made it to Makrinitsa again as it was heavily raining when we went last friday. We tried to go yesterday but after waiting for the bus we eventually found out it was a bank holiday and they weren't running.

The trip involved 4 bus rides in total and a fair amount of hanging around waiting for them. The views however were stunning and the old hillside buildings very picturesque. The village was founded in the beginning of the 13th century in the area of a Byzantine monastery and slowly grew in size especially during times of conflict such as pirate raids and the ottoman empire. The main square is full of enormous plane trees offering great shade and water flows freely through channels and springs. There is a small church and several tavernas in the centre with shops selling trinkets and various local herbs, fruit and honey.

An interesting but tiring day as it was very hot.
