Yellow flower

I've had a look at a wild flower book and (as usual) I haven't been able to identify this flower, growing on the verge of the track to my cottage. If someone out there knows what it is, please put me out of my ignorance! 

I walked into the village this afternoon and did a circuit round the back, with views to Kirkhope Tower which I might walk to later on in my stay. There were some Jacob sheep, including a ram with four magnificent horns. I wasn't quick enough to get a photo but might have another shot if I go back there. 

There's a pub, The Cross Keys Inn, a primary school, a church and a parish hall, but no shops although you can buy eggs on an honesty box basis at two houses.
