This is a mural in my hospital ward…

There are several running the length of the corridor and they look great and certainly brighten the ward. But they also amuse me because the ward is de Sausmarez Ward and the murals are Saumarez Park. Two different families with similar names.
If you go back far enough it was a single family but James de Sausmarez  tried to anglisise his name by removing an ‘S’ and dropping the ‘de’. This was because he was in the Royal Navy, at one time was second in command to Lord Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 when they defeated a Franco-Spanish Squadron. Britain was constantly at war with France; hence the Anglicisation of the name to de Saumarez. Though it still looks pretty French to me…
