Life below stairs

We took a tour of Pollok House today but this time concentrating on the life of a servant. In the 1920s there were 50 servants in the house. Of those that lived in, the male servants quarters were in the basement and the female servants slept in the attic rooms. The highest paid was the butler at £60 pa and the housekeeper at £45 pa.
We visited the butler's room, the linen room, various cupboards, the gun room and finally the kitchen which is now the Edwardian Cafe.
An interesting tour detailing the long day and hard life in domestic service but also emphasising the kindness the Stirling Maxwell family showed to their staff.
