Strongpoint Corbiere

A catch up with Evolybab, a few hours of writing, coffee in the sunshine - and then this afternoon an opportunity to burrow (almost literally) in to some fascinating history.

Jersey has hundreds of underground bunkers and gun emplacements constructed under the third reich during occupation in WW2. Some have been restored, like this one, and open to the public periodically. There are in fact two bunkers here, joined by a tunnel - an M19 Fortress Mortar is housed in one of them (pic in extras for anyone who might be interested).

The commander of this bunker, a 19 year old unteroffizier at the time, returned to the island some decades later, and was amazed to find the bunker preserved, and was able to share his stories of the men and their experiences, for the benefit of local historians and future visitors. Very moving.
