Kit's Year

Plenty of Puffins

We had been booked on a boat trip to the Farne Islands yesterday but with the wind they rang and postponed it for today. The local authorities had stopped landings on most of the islands from Sunday due to the increase in bird flu affecting the sea birds but Longstone Island remained open as there were no significant bird colonies.

On the way out to the island we saw all sorts of sea birds including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, eider ducks and kittiwakes. We also saw plenty of seals both in the water and on the rocks. We had a short stop on the island to visit the lighthouse where Grace Darling and her father lived and famously rescued sailors from a wrecked ship by rowing out to pick them up.

It was a fabulous trip and I definitely want to return next year and to hopefully get closer to the puffins on land.
