The dike has been overhauled

Group of statues depicting a woman with an umbrella and a child, who is looking at a large spade in the dike. There is a bird on the spade.

'The dike has been overhauled'

In 1995 the threat of flooding on the rivers was so great that a quarter of a million people in the river area had to evacuate. Also in Columbus. Immediately afterward, a project was started to improve the dike and develop naturally. This work of art is a lasting memory of that project.

The shovel represents work on the dike. The woman with a child and umbrella symbolizes protection against the water. The bird refers to the new nature.

The artwork was created by visual artist Dick Matze, and commissioned by the then Polder District Tieler- en Culemborgerwaarden. In 2002, the current Rivierenland Water Board was created through a merger.
