Work on the spool

The sleek fort Werk aan het Spoel near Culemborg is a fantastic location. It is a cultural meeting place on the Lek with attractive catering facilities and a sun terrace. Artists show their creations in a studio in the old fortress guard house. And various cultural events bring life to the brewery. Various recreational cycling, walking,  and strolling routes intersect here near the landing stage of the Liniepont. Enjoy a delicious cup of coffee or a tasty lunch in the restaurant Caatje aan de Lek.

Work on the Spool then
In 1815 an inundation fan sluice with an earthen battery was constructed in the Lekdijk near Goilberdingen. In 1848 the battery was improved into a fortress. Later, the inundation system was optimized and the fortress got four bombproof buildings. The dike road ran straight through the fort in peacetime but was diverted in case of mobilization. In 1939, seven concrete shelters and two machine-gun casemates were built on the fort. South of the fort stands a high freestanding wall in a meadow. This 'bullet trap' is the remnant of a German shooting range.
