Ruined buildings, Kayakoy, Turkey

This photograph was kindly supplied by SallyMair for our series of shots of places mentioned in the LornaL blipfoto journal. (For details of how to take part in this exercise yourself, please see our entry of 13th June 2022.)

It shows remains of the formerly Greek village of Kayakoy in Muğla province Turkey. After the Turko Greek war (1912-1922), Greek areas of Turkey and Turkish-controlled areas of Greece were exchanged. The newly arrived settlers found the environment to be very difficult and very quickly moved to local towns. This village was abandoned and the buildings damaged by earthquakes over the following decades. Find out more about the village on Wikipedia.

One such earthquake was that of 26th December 1939. Lorna mentions it in her war diary entry of 7th January 1940. This entry features in Episode 4 of our podcast series.
