Day 4 - Wieskirke, Oberammergau

We left early to get to our final destination of the day, Oberammergau. Made a quick stop to view the fairy tale Neuschwanstein Castle, home of King Ludwig II and then on to Wieskirche. It was quite foggy so my castle photo is cloudy at best. The Pilgrim Church at Wies is oval in shape and Rococo in design. It houses a statue of Christ in chains with an interesting history. The German countryside in Bavaria dotted with small villages is lovely. We attended Mass at another stunning church, St. Martin, in Bad Kohlgrub. We had time for a quick walk around in the town of Oberammergau before we had to get seated for the play. Not sure what I expected but the play was even better than imagined. The music, costumes, special scenes and acting were phenomenal. We were not allowed to take photos once the play started. We had great seats, those in the row in front of and beside us were from our group and we were in the last row of the first section. Our meal, during a long intermission, consisted of soup, fork tender pot roast with vegetables and fresh fruit; it was so tasty. We were at the Passion Play/on the bus until almost midnight so our “hotel” staff had gone home for the night. The accommodations were quaint, no a/c or ceiling fans and it was quite warm but we felt like it gave us the complete Oberammergau experience. Our breakfast was as delicious as any on the trip and the staff was kind and pleasant. I hope everyone interested in this unique opportunity can experience The Passion Play. Thanks for stopping by. Stay safe.

“His sacrifice is the heart of the story. But not the end of the story. The Lord's resurrection is the most glorious, victorious moment in history.” - Liz Curtis Higgs,
