Lucius Mammius Maximus

We paid a visit to the British Museum's exhibition about Pompeii and Herculaneum. There's an astonising range of everyday objects rescued from the ruined city that tell the story of the people's lives. It concluded apropriately with some of the sobering remains of the thousands of people whi died in AD 79 when the volcano erupted.

This is a bronze statued found in the theatre at Herculaneum. Although a rich benefactor, like a large number residents in these cities Lucius Mammius Maximus was a former slave. No photos in the exhibition - Lucius is the Great Court.
