Lathyrus Odoratus

Third instar

As usual my nasturtiums are hosting lots of Large White butterfly larvae. These ones are the third instar, so between two and three weeks old and about 10mm long. At this stage they still feed gregariously and, unlike many butterfly species, they sit on the upper surface of the leaves - the mustard oils in the leaves that they eat ensures that they are safe from predation by birds.
