Michaelmas

Michaelmas falls on the 29th September so this Michaelmas daisy is flowering about 8 weeks early.  Here it is being visited by a green-veined white butterfly, Pieris napi.

Although Michaelmas daisies are native to North America, they have been grown in UK gardens since the early 1700s.  Several species have escaped and become established in the wild.  This particular species (whatever it may be) is locally common along the south coast of Fife.
