Red-headed woodpecker

I recently heard from another park walker that he had seen some red-headed woodpeckers at Geneva State Park on Lake Erie. That's about 50 minutes from our home, heading toward Erie, Pennsylvania. As we planned to meet friends for dinner out that way, it's probably no surprise that we took a little detour into the park to look for...you guessed it, a red-headed woodpecker. This handsome fellow obliged us by climbing up the tree trunk where we spotted him. The park is right on Lake Erie with a lot of swamp land filled with dead trees and old snags like the one in the picture. The dinner was good. Seeing our friends was delightful. But blipping this striking bird was the highlight of my day.
