America - represented by New York

America pops up in Lorna's Diary of the war several times, so we are really pleased to have received this photograph of New York from 1bluebell to add to our 'album' of modern-day shots of Lorna's war diary locations.

As well as reporting American research into the finances of Nazi leaders (21st September 1939), Noel Coward's contributions to the war effort from his base in America (3rd August 1940), and the sudden death of the UK ambassador to the US (12th December 1940), Lorna also criticises American face-saving over the Russian invasion of Finland (15th March 1940), and Roosevelt's reluctance to send support when Paris fell (14th June 1940).

It is also interesting to look back at the comments that blippers made on a couple of Lorna's diary entries in November 2020. In 'our' time Trump and Biden were contesting the presidency of the US. 80 years earlier another election was fought and won: see the entries of 4th November 1940 and 5th November 1940.

All these diary entries are performed by Lorna's great-great niece Bethany Ray in our podcast of the Diary of the war.

Those who followed our LornaL journal will also remember the mystery of her parents' marriage in Florida in 1910. This is another connection between Lorna and the US.

Our stock of blipper-sourced location shots is currently running low, so this is an appeal to everyone who reads this journal to take a look at our list and/or the interactive map to see if they have a contribution(s) to send to h.hall@napier.ac.uk. Thank you!
