The Dreaded Apostrophe.

Many people seem to have great difficulty using the apostrophe.  The rule seems to be 'when in doubt put one in'.. The confusion is so great many distinguished writers and linguists have argued that the best way of eliminating the confusion would be to get rid of this troublesome squiggle altogether and never use it at all.
Maybe they have a point.
