Powell's Pink

Big Pink (the U.S. Bancorp tower) from the corner of NW 10th & Couch (pronounced KOOCH) in the Pearl District.

Both red brick buildings are part of the Powell's City of Books complex.
Before there was a Pearl District, before there were streetcars and Peet's Coffee and Whole Foods Market and hi-rise condominiums and shops for running shoes and yoga clothes, there was Powell's.

These are hard times for brick-and-mortar bookstores, but Powell's manages to hang on because it is a well-loved anchor of the community.
