Nicky and her Nikon

All together now!

Last night when I went to bed I felt I could finally relax as everything was coming together - we all had negative Covid tests, the rest of the family were on the last leg of their journey to join us without missing a flight, no suitcases had been left behind, and now we could finally look forward to the cruise. When I woke up at 4.30 am this morning (damn jet lag) it all changed - there was a message on the family group WhatsApp to say that when Tommy got to the hotel late last night, he realised he had lost his passport…..

This resulted in an instant rise in stress levels, as that meant he could not come on the cruise. What followed was a few very stressful hours where he contacted Anchorage airport, American Airlines had already been contacted by Inca online, trying to find out if someone had handed it in. He also asked the cruise agent to contact the transfer coach company in case they found it there. Eventually the airline contacted Tommy to say that it had been found. What a relief! Tommy and Inca got a taxi to the airport to go collect it.

After having all the documentation checked, passports checked, temperatures taken, we were all ready to depart Anchorage to go by train to Seward. The train journey was going to be a highlight of this trip, a train with a glass dome roof and huge windows for viewing the stunning scenery. About an hour before we were to board the train we heard there had been a rockfall and the track was blocked. Yet another problem! What ensued was us hanging around the hotel waiting to hear if we could go by train or not. It was not very well handled, the decision was made we would be going to Seward by coach instead, but we only found out when all the coaches were gone and yet there was a group of us still waiting to go so we had to wait for another surplus coach to arrive. Our luggage had gone on another coach. We were meant to eat lunch on the train but now there was nothing provided for lunch so we scrambled around buying nut bars and sandwiches from a cafe. Not what you expect from a luxury cruise from Silversea!

The coach journey to Seward went through the Chugach National park area so the scenery was beautiful. Our coach driver told us many interesting facts as we drove along but was a little too chatty for my tastes - I wanted to read my book and she spoke and spoke and spoke....

We finally got to Seward and have now boarded the boat ready for the cruise. We have prebooked on daily excursions on land which we are excited about, I booked a photography day for myself which I was really looking forward to but I have just found it it has been cancelled.

Not the best day!

No time for photographs today so the young adults obliged!
