Isle of Man

This photo was taken on the road outside the village of Kirkland.  It is a view of part of West Cumbria with the Isle of Man in the background.  There are villages as well as Cleator and Cleator Moor in the photo, these would have connections to the numerous coalmines and iron ore mines.  Both were used in the steel industry along with limestone of which there is a lot about. The iron ore, haematite was a rich ore and as the name suggests it is 'blood red' in colour.  My wife used to work in the haematology and transfusion departments at Whitehaven Hospital. I have been underground at Florence Mine, Egremont, before it closed its underground visits  Our camera club has a visit there next Saturday looking at what remains on the surface.
