Auxiliary Units

This novel, which was recommended as a good yarn, has revealed a bit of World War 2 history that I was quite unaware of. In 1940 Winston Churchill established ‘Auxiliary Units’, secret teams of men who would engage in guerrilla attacks if the Germans invaded. In 1940 that invasion was, for many British people, a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.
The Auxiliary Units weren’t planned as a Resistance force. It was expected that the members would be killed within two weeks of the Germans arriving. If they weren’t, they were expected to kill themselves or each other rather than be captured. It sounds like a Boy’s Own story – but it seems it was for real.
