Cambridge - Emmanuel College

The latest addition to our series of photographs of locations mentioned by Lorna in her Diary of the war is of Cambridge. This is the chapel at Emmanuel College, kindly sent to Hazel at h.hall@napier.ac.uk by pandammonium

Surprisingly for someone who had studied at Cambridge not long before writing her diary, Lorna only mentions the town in one entry. This is on September 22nd 1939. At this point, she is convinced that one of her fellow students has drowned in the wreck of the Courageous. Lorna later finds out on September 25th that she was wrong (and our research shows that this man lived for another three decades after his mistaken death). You can hear Lorna report the death and then correct herself in Episode 2 of our podcast series

Lorna mentions Emmanuel specifically in one of her poems. She writes about catching the bus at Emmanuel college in Coming down. You can listen to the poem in Episode 11 of our podcast series. It's one of four 'bonus' episodes of poetry narrated by Lorna's great-great niece Bethany Ray.

This is only our second English location in this collection. The other was Hadrian's Wall, supplied by walkingMarj, and posted on 13th July. We would like to appeal to other blippers in England to see if they might be willing to send us pictures of one or more of the following places:
