FALLING WARRIOR

Henry Moore (1898-1981) sculpted the 'Falling Warrior' in 1956/7. It is bronze with a green patina, and sited in the Memorial Court, Clare College, Cambridge.
In a letter dated 15th Jan '55 he writes, "The idea for the 'Warrior' came to me at the end of 1952. It was evolved from a pebble I found on the seashore in the summer of '52 and which reminded me of the stump of a leg, amputated at the hip. Just as Leonardo says that a painter can find a battle scene in the lichen marks on a wall, so this gave me a start of the 'Warrior' idea."
I came across this wonderful sculpture as I wandered around Clare College Memorial garden.
