False Oxlip

There are plenty of these hybrids between Primroses and Cowslips dotted around the nature reserve. They stand out in terms of both size and the deeper yellow of the flowers. The flowers are held more upright than in the true Oxlip, Primula elatior, which is mostly found in woods in East Anglia, but does get quite close to the reserve, just over the border in Hertfordshire. The Primula vulgaris x Primula veris hybrids are the source of the showy garden polyanthuses.
