A view from St Swithin

Sommocolonia

The lads (me,Mike and Ed) had a walk up to the village behind the house today. We walked on a trail in heavily forested areas with great views down to Barga. The village was a much prized site during WW2 and given the terrain you can imagine that the fighting must have been brutal. We saw many chestnut trees and some flowering cyclamen. When we reached Sommocolonia we had the place to ourselves. It was siesta time and only mad dogs and Scotsmen were around - it was very hot. At the very top of the hill is a memorial to some young Italian partisans who died fighting the Germans. We took an alternative route down the hill taking in a welcome stop for beer and ice cream.
