Old Market Hall

We were in Castleford town centre today for a short visit. Despite a generally run-down appearance there are wonderful old relics of a more prosperous age.

This Market Hall was originally opened in 1880, but was damaged by fire in 1927 and was rebuilt by 1929. It finally closed in 1991 to be replaced by an alternative indoor market along the street. I think the elaborate brickwork and stonemasonry are fabulous.

It is currently just a ‘walk-through’ between two streets.
