This is a shoe horn and boot button lacer which would have been used to put on the button-up boots and shoes that were worn in Victorian and Edwardian times.   A friend who collected Scottish silver gave me this with a little label saying it was hallmarked Canongate about 1830.  If so it must be fairly valuable but I have found no evidence that it is correct.  Canongate was one of several places in Scotland which were entitled to hallmark silver to verify the purity of silver and now there is only Edinburgh in Scotland and London, Birmingham and Sheffield in England.
