Dune

As work days go, this was a pretty awesome Wednesday. The agenda had been written so that on this hump day we could be away from the meeting room visiting project sites and breaking up the week nicely.

We went to a beach community south of Vilankulo town, where WWF is supporting the monitoring of fishing catch data, useful to give the community a sense of whether catches are remaining within sustainable limits. After a presentation of the community’s work, we poked around on the beach for a while. As with most systems in the world, it’s mostly women and their roles in trading, processing and facilitating who hold together this small fishing community.

In late afternoon we went to the Dunas Vermelhas (Red Dunes) in Vilankulo, a towering dune system with great views over the ocean and town. A perfect spot to scramble up the sand to watch the sunset, with the guides impressively rustling up about thirty camping chairs to accommodate the group.
