PINKTOBER - DAY 17 - AND COMMUNITY FRIDGE DAY TOO!

Although I wore my pink jumper to the Community Fridge today, as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - in case you didn’t know - I decided I had better take one of the Silly Saturday Gang with me so that I knew for sure I had something pink.  Reeth, as you know, is very pink, and has been on many outings just lately, so I thought that Laura Lamb might enjoy coming with me to the fridge and of course, she was wearing her pink BCAM ribbon so fitted in well.

I didn’t have too many grotty jobs to do today, in fact, compared with some in recent weeks, they were fine - so they were finished quite quickly.  It’s amazing how, as soon as we walk in the door, we see what needs to be done and just get on with the various jobs.  We had some good vegetables, and you can see aubergines and asparagus in the photographs, as well as some apples, which looked as if someone had been kind enough to donate them from apple trees in their garden.  There were also some lovely pears, also a donation from a friend of Karen, and of course, they were gratefully received.

I noticed that there were very few cakes today - so either the stores have stopped ordering so many or there was a Cake Fest in Swindon at the weekend, with everyone buying up the cakes!   We did, however, have some very nice Vanilla Tear and Share Brioche buns and I have to say, because I had a little taster, that they were delicious.   You can see Karen in my collage enjoying the very last one that sat on the plate and we distinctly heard it say “Eat me, Eat me” so Karen did just that and she said it was lovely.

You can also see Linda in the collage - these two are great friends, so thought I shouldn’t put one in without the other, so managed top grab a shot of her sorting out some of the baking sheets, with a little help from Laura Lamb.

I had some great conversations in the café today - some of the men had come last week and enjoyed it so they came back this week and we also had several new people in today together with a couple of new volunteers - who are always welcome.  The men I was speaking to were eager to learn more English - and one tried to teach me some German - he says he also speaks Arabic, but I told him I didn’t think I could manage that in the time we had today!  There is always a lovely atmosphere in the café so it is so good to know that people are coming back and also telling their friends about it - but of course, there aren’t many places you can get a cup of good percolated coffee and a cake for only 50p.

We are pleased that the Community Fridge makes such a difference in the community and, in fact, it serves people from all over the town.  As I have said before, friendships are forged whilst people are queuing up outside and then they come into the café for coffee and cake and carry on chatting in the warm. Karen, Linda and I all agree that the numbers may very well increase once the winter comes, but we are well prepared for this as all of us enjoy chatting!

I’m sure you all know what to do by now - but if not, please click on this LINK so that those who cannot afford to pay for a mammogram, may have one free.  Thank you.
