Season of mists

And mellow fruitfulness.

Although the golden stooks of W H Davies's poem are no longer seen in the fields these majestic beech trees on the Pitfour Estate have stood through centuries of change. They have escaped being cut down for their timber, living through the Napoleonic Wars, two World Wars, seeing the mechanisation of farming and surviving countless storms. It is to be hoped that nothing as destructive as Storm Arwen fells them this winter. In these chaotic times they give a sense of continuity.
